How much does GPA matter after you secure a fulltime job?

$

0

I am currently in a masters program and I have possibly secured a job that I really enjoy. I can graduate in the summer with a 3.3, or go back in the fall too and get it up to a 3.5. More than likely, the firm can be flexible in regards to starting FT in the fall or spring. For the future (switching jobs 3-5 years from now, MBA apps), do you think a 3.3 vs 3.5 would be worth another semester?

BB HR: What is the process for checking GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc ?

lolwut

I see couple of questions on BB background check for FO jobs every day.

There are several good threads, explaining the process and everything, but advices almost never come from someone who actually worked at the BB HR. Either people speak from their experience which is kinda random, or they just preach 10 commandments.

I would like to know how exactly are GPA, ECs, test scores, references, criminal history, etc. are being checked.

Cumulative GPA vs most recent performance

Im going into my senior year at a Semi-Target undergrad school and want to break into consulting. I have a few decent work experiences with a boutique and a F50 company and I am the head of the Consulting club. The issue is that my cumulative GPA is horrible due to my complacency in my first year. My second year was ok but now good enough around a 3.3. My most recent year however was a 3.9. My cumulative GPA is still around 3.3 but my performance has seen consistent improvement. What are my chances of landing a job and whats the best way to overcome the GPA issue. Thanks for any help you have to offer.

Standardized tests or GPA as a measure of intelligence?

Personally, I think standardized tests like SAT,GMAT, GRE ( even lsat for non-law school candidates actually) should be valued more rather than GPA. Or is it only my opinion to rationalize my rubbish GPA (3.3 for engineering from target /3.2 for MFE from top tier)?

Some of my classmates from MFE have very bad GRE like 160 but they have near perfect GPA. Some who took GMAT have below 700. Even my roommate who is always making fun of MBA students for being dumb has 620 on GMAT(which is very low even considering she is not native English speaker, since GMAT also has quantitative section that she can make up her loss from verbal section)

London Target Masters for Asset Management

Hey all,

I am currently a student at a target in Canada with stupid low gpa with major in econ and minor in math.

Freshman: 1.66
Sophomore: 2.89
Junior 1st Semester: 3.89

My father's company was in danger of bankruptcy during first 2 years of my studies and I could not focus on my studies at all.

I have GMAT score of 730 though, which I am hoping to leverage to get into a masters program to offset the low gpa, and school prestige.

I would love to work in AM industry in london, and what programs should I aim for ?

I will most likely graduate with 3.0~3.1 GPA without the help from my school's advisors

How to save my butt after horrible 2.1GPA first year?

Difference between a 3.7, 3.8 and 3.9 GPA

How differently would a recruiter/admissions counselor consider a 3.7 GPA, a 3.8 GPA and a 3.9 GPA? 3.7 is a little low I know, but is there really that much of a difference between a 3.8 (magna cum laude) and a 3.9 (summa cum laude) coming from a state school?

Networking and Consulting

Networking (honestly I hate what the word has become on WSO-- really just being cool and building relationships) is necessary for anyone aspiring career success, but it seems like it is mainly in IB where you see the gritty and grinding nature of it, aka sending out hundreds of emails to people you don't know.

In consulting, what is the proper way of networking to help yourself get an interview while not appearing desperate? Take a situation for instance: Attends target and has decent experience, but lacking the GPA for MBB. Even hours studying in advance on case prep and truly learning about the firm and industry will all go to nothing if there is no interview extension.

What are the legal criteria for denying a potential lessee and is it legal to require someone to cosign the lease?

Background: I am planning to purchase properties to rent to college students.

Questions: What are legal criteria for denying a potential lessee? Can a person be disqualified based on GPA or the "disability" of alcohol addiction/abuse? Also, can a lessee be required to have someone cosign the lease and provide surety against property damage?

At classic crossroads - job or master's degree?

job vs grad.jpg

Long story short: 23yo; just finished a 3yr B.Sc. in Finance; private Norwegian university; lousy 2.35 GPA (EDIT: 3.04); lots of extra-curricular activities; ~ $60k in student loans; ~ $90k gross cash; no relevant job experience; been doing okay with stock investing/trading for the last three years.

Now I am faced with the classical decision of choosing between 1) improving grades, do GMAT/TOEFL tests and pursuing graduate studies or 2) finding a relevant and fulfilling job that could lead the way to a desirable career path.

Does percentile matter (or do schools only care about absolute GPA)?

$

Some schools tend to have crazy grade inflation (where the average is close to 3.6) and others tend to have the average closer to 3.0.

Does the percentile matter (say top 20%)? If so, is there a place to put this on the app?

Won't be applying for b-schools until a few years from now - but just curious.

I feel underdeveloped

Someone got the same feeling? I really feel underdeveloped, both in terms of knowledge as well as interpersonal skills.
However, I managed to get quiet easily an internship within the big 4, starting after the summer. My GPA is really pathetic (2.5ish), and my basic finance knowledge is so little, but still I managed to convince both the recruiters as well as the managing partner within the big 4 firm.
What can I do to become more confident, also what's the best way to get rid of that feeling? How to become better interpersonally skilled?

This class is gonna fuck up my GPA yo

So I took this Market Microstructure & Electronic Trading course. The professor is a baydass and clearly knows his shit, but he also doesn't give a shit who fails. A third of the class already dropped. I kind of just feel like a dumbass when I read the material. But everyone who took it in the past says that they learned a lot.

I have a 4.0 right now. Do you guys think it makes sense to stick it out and take the C I'm not even sure to get here, or should I drop it for International Finance or something like that and learn this on my own time? I really want to learn this material, but that GPA though... it's like the one thing I have going for me.

Post Degree Courses for MBA Admissions

Happy Labor Day!

I'm currently taking courses to work towards my state specific CPA requirements, and have a question regarding the grades I get in these courses as they relate to MBA admissions.

I graduated with my BS in Finance with a 3.6 and plan on applying to a few top 10 MBA programs in a few years.

When you go through the application process, do you also disclose your GPA for courses you took outside of your specific college/major? In my case I'll have several accounting courses from a community college that I'll have taken post-bachelors. Will having a high GPA in these courses help my admissions chances?

Thanks guys!

Low GPA/Better School v High GPA/Lesser School

Hey guys, could use some help.

Currently go to a LARGE public university in the southeast. It's one of the best public schools out there, but admittedly it's not a top target school or anything.

I've completed 4 semesters (currently taking a semester off to figure out some stuff) and my GPA is horrible, about a 2.45. I've had some family troubles which are to blame and I was working a lot, but I'll admit that a large part of it was me not caring enough (don't know what changed from high school to college, I was waitlisted at a couple Ivy league schools back in high school, but oh well that's not important).

Value of Double Major?

Next year will begin an analyst stint at an elite boutique. Hate to think too far ahead but am at a point where I need to decide to keep or drop a second major. It will make the rest of this semester and next semester much easier for me...but it of course might make my GPA seem less impressive given that it was only one with one major.

Do you all think this has any bearing at all on PE recruiting, business school, and the like? I assume it's very marginal, but I wanted to hear it from those who have made it further than I.

How to know what is the best business school one can get into?

Are there any formulas that approximate this with GPA and GMAT scores? What if GPA is great and GMAT is poor or vis versa?

Am I Screwed?

Currently I work for a small boutique capital management firm also offering financial planning and insurance. I handle all investment operations/maintanence for our client. I would like to transition into equity research but realize I will probably have to start in a back office and work my way up.

Little background. 2 years out of non target undergrad: cum GPA ~ 3.0 with major GPA (finance and international business) ~ 3.1.

GPA Background Check

Recently accepted an IB offer from a BB, go to a target. When I accepted my offer, I had a 3.1 GPA. However, I mentioned that I had a 3.2 in the online application, since there a was 3.2 GPA minimum requirement. I am taking all easy classes and my GPA will go up to a 3.2 at the end of this semester. Will the background check find out this once it is conducted?

GPA after job offer

How much does GPA matter after accepting a job offer? I am not slacking off but I have 3 awful classes this year that are likely to bring me down. I will still have over a 3.5, but my gpa is likely to go down by .2 points. Next spring I will have better classes but how bad does one bad semester look by potential employers after your first job and grad school?
